Why is My Policy Quoted With a Surplus Lines Company?
If your policy has been quoted with a ‘surplus lines’ carrier in the Excess and Surplus Lines marketplace, it is because the situation is such that there is no ‘standard’ company willing to accept the risk and offer a quote because the property or occupancy characteristics violate underwriting guidelines or eligibility requirements.
Typical examples of policies issued in the Excess and Surplus Lines market include (but certainly aren’t limited to) vacant property, coastal property, short-term rentals, properties with a high number of past losses, older homes, historic properties, habitational property (apartments and multi-family), and similar risks.
